Electro Chemistry Materials

Electro chemistry is the branch of science that deals with chemical reactions using electric currents, and when using electro chemistry materials, there is a transfer between an electron conductor and an ionic conductor. Nonetheless, this is not always the case because it has been proven that a chemical reaction can generate an electric current all by itself. On the other hand, there are instances where chemical reactions might need an external force, or what is called voltage, to proceed in generating an electric current. This happens with numerous electro chemistry materials that are part of your everyday life.

Basic Principles

Without a doubt, getting to know the different types of electro chemistry materials that exist can be quite overwhelming, especially when you’re not familiar with the concepts and principles of the field. For you to get a fair idea, the two basic principles involved in the electrochemical process are oxidation and reduction, which can be simply definedas electro chemistry materials going through a change.  Perhaps you remember that in Chemistry class you studied the chemicals and how they have oxidation numbers, in which they lose certain amount of electrons in order for their valence to increase.

More AboutElectro Chemistry Materials

  • Electrochemical Cells–These cells can be found in an electric current from a redox reaction, where the two conductive electrodes of an electrochemical cell are the anode for oxidation occurrence and the cathode for reduction.
  • Standard Electrode Potential– This is usually classified as reduction or oxidation potentials, and it’s where electro chemistry materials can undergo multiple reactions.
  • Spontaneity of Redox Reaction - The spontaneity of a redox reaction can be identified on how they are being used in generating an electric current. If an electrochemical reaction is used in formulating an electric current in electrochemical cells, then it is a spontaneous reaction of electro chemistry materials.

Daily life with Electro Chemistry Materials

Perhaps the most common electrochemical cells that are used at home are the batteries, which are made up of chemicals that respond to each other to produce an electric current. When all the cells in the batteries are used up, another set of cells are applied in order to use the battery again, which is commonly known as the use of rechargeable batteries. Certainly, you’re not thinking about these reactions when you use your batteries – or any other item – but the truth is that electro chemistry materials are surrounding you all the time. Moreover, you can also find electro chemistry materials in cars, bleach and detergent, just to give you a few examples.

When it comes to other accessories, such as jewelry, these can be treated with electro chemistry materials to create ornaments around it, or to twist the metal in order to make loops. Additionally, decorative coatings may beadded to them which cause the reaction of different electro chemistry materials, such as silver and gold. This procedure is known as electroplating and the one used the most is perhaps chrome plating, where corrosive materials are coated with anti-corrosive metals.
